Autonomous Game Optimization with Built-in AI for Steam Deck: deckopt Architecture, Hardware Protection and Performance Dynamics
Score —The system architecture, deterministic safety layer and Godot 4 interface engineering of deckopt, a built-in artificial intelligence engine that autonomously optimizes game-based TDP, GPU frequency, FSR and launch parameters at runtime on Valve Steam Deck (LCD/OLED) and SteamOS 3.x.

Summary: On handheld gaming consoles (handheld PC), performance depends on managing the delicate balance between thermal budget (TDP), battery capacity and frame pacing rather than raw processing power. Valve Steam Deck users often spend hours researching voltage, GPU clock frequency and launch parameters for each game in internet forums. In this study, we examine the architecture, system-level design decisions and open-source alpha distribution of the deckopt engine, which runs directly on Steam Deck (LCD Jupiter and OLED Galileo) hardware, scans the games in the library, generates a game-specific optimization profile with Google Gemini 2.5 Flash and passes it through hardware protection filters with strict deterministic limits.
Part I: The Thermal and Power Deadlock on Handheld Consoles
In traditional desktop gaming systems, hardware components (CPU, discrete GPU) can consume hundreds of watts of power and have high thermal ceilings (TDP). However, in mobile form factors such as the Valve Steam Deck, the entire system must fit within a 15-watt ceiling thermal design power (APU TDP) and a battery with a capacity of 40 Wh (LCD) / 50 Wh (OLED).
STEAM DECK HARDWARE DYNAMICS AND POWER CEILING · AMD Custom APU (Zen 2 + RDNA 2)
Steam Deck LCD (Jupiter)
-
SoC: AMD Aerith (7nm, 4C/8T Zen 2)
-
GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CU (1.0 - 1.6 GHz)
-
Display: 7-inch 1280x800, fixed 60 Hz
-
Battery: 40 Wh (~1.5 - 4 hours)
Steam Deck OLED (Galileo)
-
SoC: AMD Sephiroth (6nm, 4C/8T Zen 2)
-
GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CU (1.0 - 1.6 GHz)
-
Display: 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 90 Hz VRR/Step
-
Battery: 50 Wh (~2.5 - 7 hours)
Under this limited power budget, three main optimization variables emerge:
- CPU/GPU Power Starvation: If a game is CPU-intensive and the TDP is released, the CPU cores draw excessive power and force the GPU to downclock; this causes sudden frame drops (stuttering).
- Frame Pacing: Getting 45 FPS on a 60 Hz panel does not feel much smoother than a stable 30 FPS experience due to irregular frame intervals (fluctuation between 33.3ms and 16.6ms). The frame rate must be an exact divisor of the display refresh rate (
refresh_hz % fps_limit == 0). - Pixel Reconstruction and Resolution Scale (FSR / Integer): When FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is enabled with a 70-80% render scale instead of the native 800p resolution, the graphics load is significantly reduced and 3-4 Watts of TDP are saved.
Part II: deckopt System Architecture
To save users from getting lost among complex sysfs parameters, Proton environment variables and forum entries, deckopt adopts a hybrid artificial intelligence orchestration model.
The system consists of two main layers:
- Client and Embedded Interface Layer (Godot 4.7 & GDScript): A user interface controlled directly with a gamepad (D-Pad and buttons) within SteamOS Game Mode, running at the native 1280x800 resolution.
- Autonomous Optimization Core (Gemini 2.5 Flash & Profile Sanitizer): An analysis engine that scans installed games, creates the target hardware profile, determines the most suitable configuration via cloud LLM inference and passes it through strict filters.

Part III: Security, Hardware Lock, and Deterministic Clipping
Generative artificial intelligence models (LLMs) are inherently probabilistic and carry a risk of hallucination. It is physically possible for a language model to suggest values for a thermal parameter such as 25W or 2200MHz that exceed device hardware limits or would lock up the system.
Therefore, in the deckopt architecture, AI output is never trusted directly. All inference results must pass through the deterministic acceptance gate (Sanitization Layer) located in profile.gd.
1. Hardware Ceiling and Floor Limits
const LIMITS := {
"tdp_w": [3, 15],
"gpu_clock_mhz": [200, 1600],
"fps_limit": [0, 90],
"refresh_hz": [40, 90],
"render_scale": [50, 100],
}
No matter what the LLM suggests, the TDP value cannot go outside the range [3, 15]. If the screen refresh rate is detected on the LCD model, the hardware ceiling is locked to an upper limit of 60 Hz, and on the OLED model to 90 Hz.
2. Mathematical Square Consistency Function
static func _fit_fps(fps: int, hz: int) -> int:
if fps == 0 or hz % fps == 0:
return fps
for d in range(fps, 29, -1):
if hz % d == 0:
return d
return hz
The frame rate target is automatically aligned to be an exact divisor of the screen refresh rate. For example, when the LLM suggests 50 FPS and the screen is 60 Hz, the value is automatically reduced to a 30 FPS base or the screen rate is adjusted to prevent screen tearing or pacing degradation.
3. Environment Variables Allowlist
To prevent shell injections and systemic corruption, only the official flags of the Proton and Mesa graphics layer are accepted:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D,PROTON_NO_ESYNC,PROTON_NO_FSYNCDXVK_ASYNC,DXVK_FRAME_RATE,RADV_PERFTESTWINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR,WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTHmesa_glthread,ENABLE_GAMESCOPE_WSI
Inputs are scanned with the regular expression ^[A-Za-z0-9_.,:=+\-/]{0,128}$; shell command chainers such as semicolon (;), ampersand (&), and pipe (|) are eliminated the moment they are detected.
Part IV: Developing a Game Mode-Compatible Interface with Godot 4
The biggest shortcoming of desktop tools running on the Steam Deck is that they depend on a keyboard and mouse in the Game Mode interface. deckopt's user interface was developed directly using the Godot 4.7 Engine.
INTERFACE AND INPUT DESIGN PRINCIPLES · Steam Input & D-Pad Navigation
-
Native Resolution: 1280x800 pixels, a pixel-distortion-free view with CanvasItems stretch mode.
-
Typography Standard: The
JetBrainsMono Nerd Fontchain is mandatory in all interface elements. -
Focus Management: Dynamic
grab_focus()on screen transitions prevents the controller focus from being lost. -
Asynchronous Cancellation Safety: In a multi-game queue, the user can stop the optimization at any moment.
The interface also activates a lock screen when it detects that the device is not a Steam Deck (for example, when launched on an ordinary Linux x86_64 computer) and terminates after informing the user:

Part V: Deployment, Installation and Future Roadmap
deckopt can integrate directly into SteamOS without any third-party store dependency.
Single-Command Installation
In Steam Deck desktop mode, the user opens the Konsole terminal and runs the following command:
curl -fsSL https://github.com/ozdil/deckopt/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash
The installation script:
- Confirms via
/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/product_namethat the device isjupiterorgalileo. - Downloads the latest build and the
SHA256SUMSdigest from GitHub Releases and verifies it. - Places the application in the
~/Applications/deckopt/directory. - Triggers SteamOS's native
steamos-add-to-steamtool to add the application to the library as a "Non-Steam Game".
When you return to Game Mode, the application appears in the library like a game and can be launched directly with the controller.
Future Phase: Decky Loader Plugin and MangoHud Offline Feedback
In the alpha version, the generated profiles are presented to the user as Quick Access Menu instructions and launch options that can be copied to the clipboard. Two main capabilities are planned for future versions:
- Decky Loader Plugin: Automatic application of profiles with root privileges (
ryzenadjandpp_od_clk_voltage) with a single tap via a React/TypeScript-based QAM panel. - MangoHud CSV Fine-Tuning (
deckopt tune): Parsing the frame rate and power telemetry collected in the background during gameplay; lowering the dynamic FSR scale if the average frame rate is below target, and capping TDP to extend battery life if it is above target.
My reading
Using artificial intelligence for hardware management on edge devices has great potential, especially on handheld consoles where thermal and power constraints are high. deckopt combines the analytical power of generative AI with deterministic hardware limits, giving the Steam Deck ecosystem a safe, open-source and community-focused optimization layer.
